Discover the Vanghentoren in Harderwijk: a 14th-century national monument with a rich history as a gateway, prison, and soup house. Open to visitors during Open Monument Day.
During this Open Monument Day, the Vanghentoren will be open to the public on Saturday, September 13, with limited access, and city guides will be present. The Vanghentoren served as the entrance to the adjacent Blokhuis, the residence of the Counts of Gelre until 1393. The Vanghentoren features a gateway with a lock slot. Around the 15th century, the guarding and security of the city were organized in this building. It also served as a city prison. From the 19th century until the Second World War, soup was cooked here and distributed to the poor. The large soup cauldron is still present. Today, the Vanghentoren is a residential house.
