Discover the Regents' Room of the Burgerweeshuis in Harderwijk – a national monument with a rich history dating back to 1554. Visit it during Open Monument Day!
In 1554, an orphanage was founded on the corner of the former Broederen (now Markt) and Donkerstraat. From the mid-17th century until 1872, the orphanage was located in the Wheme. See the small orphanage gate at the Wheme on the Achterom. The current orphanage was purchased in 1872 and received its richly decorated facade in 1874. The last orphan left in 1937. Today, the Burgerweeshuis is a foundation that provides financial support to institutions in the cultural, societal, and social fields in Harderwijk.
