Hortuspark en kruidentuin

Discover the historic Hortus Park and the herb garden in Harderwijk – a monument with centuries-old ginkgo biloba. Free admission, also on Open Monument Day!

The former botanical garden of the Gelderland Academy was located on this site. The garden was laid out in 1693. After the closure of the Academy in 1811, the Hortus fell into disrepair and the plants were sold. In 1989, the municipality created the current herb garden. They used the catalogue of the Hortus, compiled by Professor EW Westenberg in 1709, as a basis. The ginkgo biloba trees and a truncated plane tree date from the academy period. The Hortus is always open to visitors, including on Open Monument Day. The volunteers of Groei & Bloei Harderwijk maintain the garden.
