About the island
The name De Ral refers to the water rail, a bird that likes to frequent reed and marsh areas. During the winter months, the Randmeren are an important area for waterfowl. Diving ducks, swans, and other winter visitors use the Veluwemeer as a resting and foraging area. This makes this part of the water not only attractive to recreational visitors but also important for birds that stay here in large numbers.
De Ral is located in the Veluwemeer, halfway between Elburg and Harderwijk. The island lies diagonally opposite Aquacentrum Bremerbergse Hoek, between the nature islands De Snip and De Kwak, and close to the bicycle ferry. The Bremerbaai swimming beach is also located in the immediate vicinity.
