De Dode Hond is the oldest island in the Randmeren. What was once constructed as a working island has grown into an open and rugged piece of nature. Among the reeds and low vegetation, you can spot birds and other animals here, and the water is always close by.
About the island
The island of De Dode Hond is located in the Eemmeer, between Huizen and Bunschoten-Spakenburg, and falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the municipality of Blaricum. Thanks to its location on the navigation channel and the view over open water, the island is a popular mooring spot, including for larger vessels.
But the island is more than just a stopover. It is the oldest island in the Randmeren and was originally constructed as a working island: a practical base for hydraulic engineering works.
Since its initial construction, countless bird species have found a safe haven here. It is not without reason that people from Bunschoten-Spakenburg still call it Vogeleiland (Bird Island), or in dialect: Voegeleilangd. You can still hear that name on and around the water.
