The small gate of the former Civic Orphanage cannot be viewed from the inside. The Civic Orphanage was founded in 1554. The first location was situated on the corner of Donkerstraat and Markt. From 1650 to 1872, the orphanage was housed in the Wheme, the building next to the small gate. In 1872, the orphanage moved for the third time, this time to the other side of the Kerkplein. In 1937, the last orphan left. The Civic Orphanage is now a foundation that provides financial support to institutions in the cultural, societal, and social fields in Harderwijk.
