Fernanda Hulman (1965, Haarlem) has been painting all her life and has worked with a variety of materials over the years. Nowadays, she consciously chooses oil paint, with which she builds up her paintings layer by layer using classical techniques. After her training at the Vrije Academie, she completed a three-year course in 17th-century painting techniques at Academie Renshof. The nature surrounding her home on the edge of the Oud Groevenbeek Estate forms an inexhaustible source of inspiration.

Nature as inspiration

Deer, sheep, and other animals of the Veluwe play a leading role in her work. Fernanda works from her own photographs but often gives backgrounds a personal interpretation. This results in paintings where reality and imagination subtly come together. Her work is characterized by a soft atmosphere and a dreamy, blurred background that draws all attention to the subject.

Classic techniques

Using underpaintings and carefully built-up layers of paint, Fernanda works according to traditional methods that originated in the 17th century. In addition to her independent work, she also undertakes commissions, including portraits of dogs. Attention, patience, and a love for nature and animals are central to all her paintings, resulting in recognizable and atmospheric images.
